Guest Speaker:

  Juan Cepeda-Rizo, PhD

Senior Thermal Systems Engineer

NASA - Jet Propulsion Laboratory

California Institute of Technology

 

Dr. Cepeda is currently a Senior Thermal Systems Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he joined in April of 2008. His primary responsibilities are design of cryogenic cooling systems for spaced based telescopes and spacecraft. He also specializes in alternative energy solutions and harvesting power from waste heat.  His current projects include:

 

·       Space Interferometer Mission (SIM) – Search for Earth-like planets around other stars.

·       NuStar  – Search for black holes.

·       Moon Mineralogy Mapper, which recently found water on the Moon.

·       Department of Energy venture for Thermal Energy Storage solutions.

·       Tesla high-efficiency heat pump generator.

 

Dr. Cepeda spent two years as an adjunct professor at Cal State Long Beach teaching engineering before joining JPL, and has over 15 years of industry experience.
