Meet our Secretary, Michelle Heng!
Why did you pick your major?
"I chose chemical engineering because I want to use my chemistry background to make a lasting impact on the environment. With chemical engineering, I can contribute to a solution to our increased energy demand and surrounding issues of climate change. "
What is your favorite course?
"ChE 330: Separations Processes. All of the fundamental concepts from lower division classes are starting to come together now! "
Why are you in SWE?
"I was struggling to find my place in engineering. Classes can be challenging but facing discrimination from your peers doesn’t make it easier. It can feel isolating trying to make it in what feels like a man’s world, but SWE gave me the resources and connections I needed to develop confidence and command respect. I joined SWE because I wanted to be a part of a supportive community that would stay with me after college. It’s a well respected organization that connects you with strong, intelligent women from all over. Engineering is a tough field to navigate, but when you uplift one another, you can shape the future of it together. "
Advice for women in STEM:
"Whether it’s an internship, research lab, or job make sure you build positive relationships with people you work with. Those connections you make will make the work that much more meaningful and enjoyable. "
